New to scale modeling? Here's a handy reference guide to common terms and concepts you'll encounter when shopping and building.
Scale
Scale refers to the ratio of the model's size to the real object. For example, a 1:24 scale model is 1/24th the size of the actual vehicle.
Common Scales
- 1:18 – Large, highly detailed diecast models
- 1:24 – Popular scale for plastic model car kits
- 1:35 – Standard scale for military models
- 1:48 – Quarter scale, popular for aircraft
- 1:72 – Smaller scale, great for large collections
- 1:144 – Very small scale, often used for aircraft
Kit Types
- Level 1 – Snap-together kits, no glue or paint required. Great for absolute beginners.
- Level 2 – Basic kits requiring glue and paint but with minimal parts.
- Level 3 – More detailed kits with additional parts and moderate painting skills needed.
- Level 4 – Complex models with finer detailing, multiple parts and advanced painting requirements.
- Level 5 – Highly detailed kits for experienced builders with advanced techniques.
Finishing Terms
- Primer – A base coat applied before painting to help paint adhere.
- Wash – A thin, dark paint applied to bring out panel lines and details.
- Dry Brushing – A technique using a nearly dry brush to highlight raised details.
- Decals – Thin stickers or water-slide transfers used for markings and insignia.
